I was aked to look into the feasability of creating a cinema app for buying drinks and snacks for a small cinema chain. Initially producing a competitive analysis to see who were the direct and indirect competition, what they provided and why. taking a more indepth look into the core features and usability of the ordering experience within the apps, the data gathered from the audit was then analyzed and collated into a report.
BackUser personas were then created to better understand the target audience, building personas allowed us to have an unbiased reference point to call back to when looking at the needs of the end user. The personas were used to create user journey maps to identify potential opportunities and improvement we could make upon uncovering pain points experienced when undertaking the task.
BackWith a stronger insight into our target audience and pain points we can aim to remove, we initially created story boards, both big picture perspective and close up to show how the solution would address the problem. Initial paper wire frames were iterated on to figure out the optimal way to group and layout the content and how best to navigate through the app.
With the structure for our information architecture decided upon, it was time to use the initial paper wire frames as a guide to produce digital versions of multiple screens along the user journey path.
With all the fundamental elements of the design laid out in our wire frames, we wanted to create a low fidelity prototype with some basic functionality to test the effectiveness of the design by inviting participants to take part in a usability study.
Using the information gathered from the participants during the usability study, from; observations, spreadsheet notes, video and audio recordings, we created an affinity map. Organising the data visually allowed us to quickly identify themes and gather insights into the areas of the design that needed to be addressed most urgently.
Now that we had updated our design using insights gathered through usability studies, we were able to progress on to producing a high fidelity version of the prototype encorporating UI elements like; colour, font selection, hierarchy and imagery to closer resemble the finished product.
